survey results are in

Remember I posted about the web designer survey on a list apart? ...of course you do, because you paid particular attention to the line which read "go take it" didn't you....didn't you??? Well, the long wait is over and after appointing some statisticians to deal with the 33,000 entries, a list apart have published their results...go investigate!

How to stop smoking

There are many "tried and tested" methods to stop smoking and I've tried them all, from nicotene patches to hypnosis, i've done the lot and I still ended up smoking...this time I have a new method....screw all that make believe crap and just quit! time will tell if this is successfull or not, I've been a nightmare in the office this week and have been a total pain in the ass to live with but so far we're looking at 6 days and no smokes.

switch to mac?

I've been considering switching back to mac for some time now...yes, that's right...switching BACK to mac. There seems to be no shortage of mac converts who tell me that "it's the right decision" and they're "glad they did it"...well, what I had omitted to mention was that I come from a mac background, indeed, my first serious introduction to computers was way back on a power mac, my design education was, of course, done on mac's, notably power macs and G3's....the first computer I owned was one of the first iMac's, in my jobs in London I used firstly a G3 powerbook and then a titanium G4 powerbook and that was that. I then switched to windows, and at that time it was windows 2000 which I found to be reliable, I could do everything I had used my mac's for and because I'd become secretly interested in programming, I'd listened to the programmers I'd been working with and come to the conclusion that windows would be the best way ahead. I have since worked on windows 2000 and XP pro, had dabblings with fedora and ubuntu linux along the way and am currently faced with the prospect of an "upgrade" to vista, can't say I'm over the moon about that to be honest! I like linux, I like windows XP and I like OSX, there are pro's and con's to each, what I want is a stable operating system, an intuitive environment and the ability to install a range of apps to allow me to do my job, all wrapped up inside a pretty machine(hey...I come from a design background!), unfortunately that currently rules out linux...sorry, I use software only available to windows or mac, that currently leaves me a choice of two, I've used both, I like both. I no longer play games, I write code and I've been reading, with some interest, several people in the coldfusion community who have switched to mac, and this has had me wondering. Perhaps it's time I gave mac another look? Anyone have any opinions, advice or personal experience they'd like to share?

Flash vIdeo article

Came across a useful article about flash video written by my colleague Mike at east coast interactive.

It's something that comes up time and time again, so I know it'll be handy for me to be able to reference it in one place and I'm guessing it'll be handy for you too or I wouldn't have bothered blogging it!

You can find the article here: http://www.flash-video-design.com

flex and wiimotes

Just saw this superb 3d desktop driven by wiimotes! Built on some open source stuff and flex, it really is a work of art.

Jack Keenan, if you're watching, you'll love this!

Adobe Thermo

Seems to have popped up on labs here: http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Thermo

I'll reserve judgement until I can at least play with a beta but its certainly an interesting idea, particularly on the "skinning" front...forgive my apparent lack of enthusiasm, but i've not been the biggest fan of wysiwyg over my years in web design/development, there have been a lot of promises made and a lot of shoddy code generated as a result, which I've often ended up having to deal with...but thats a rant for another day ;)

I'm going to keep an open mind and wait and see...
