One of my new found coldfusion buddies has quite rightly pointed out that I've not mentioned the little get together next Friday, so I've conveniently copied his comment and pasted it here so it hopefully gets noticed!

we're having a bit of a ColdFusion get together in Aberdeen next Friday if anybody is interested :-). Just spreading the word ;-)

RGU Union - 7th of September - 16:30
Free food, right next to the bar and some very talented guys coming along. What else does a ColdFusioner need???

East Coast Interactive turns 1 year old

We'd been so busy building cool stuff that we almost missed our own birthday!

It's been a great first year for East Coast Interactive Ltd, we've worked on some very fancy stuff and made a lot of clients happy, not to mention that they inherited my good self from whitesparks several months ago and have recently seen fit to appoint me as a director!

We now have in place a great team, to be expanded further in the near future by the looks of it, a reputation that's built itself on quality of work and an uncompromising attitude to delivering what we say we will, when the client needs it...even if this means 24 hour sessions! we've also been fortunate to have the continued business input and leadership of one of the UK's brightest entrepreneurs in Stuart Ebdy, our MD.

Here's to year 2!

Red Hot Chili Peppers and Biffy Clyro

only a matter of hours now...really looking forward to this one although I have a sneaky suspicion that Biffy Clyro might just steal the show for me. I've become a huge fan of "the biffy".

On Last FM, someone shouted "Red Hot chili Peppers are trousers, mon the biffy! and although I've been a fan of the chilis for a long long time, I saw them undone by the Foo Fighters several years back...so lets wait and see...

The Verdict

The positives were flea playing a trumpet solo (never imagined i'd ever see that!) and the only "old" song they played in the shape of "give it away".

Well...I hate to say it but the chilis were a HUGE disappointment, sure, you know about it when they come on stage and because of their reputation, the crowd goes mad....BUT...they've been touring for a good while and in my opinion, their recent music is a droning, samey, winey afair that fails to show what the hugely talented individuals that make the band can really do....in my opinion, they were not the same band I saw the last time.

Other things that bothered me about the gig were the seemingly endless numbers of people stood with mobile phones in the air recording shit instead of enjoying the gig and more than anything, the massive "mosh pit" fenced off, semi circled area round the front of the stage for exclusive "fans"...what a load of bollocks...what happened to the red hot chili peppers?...this was the last time I will go and see them. heartbreaking to see such an overpriced, feeble, sell out, piece of shit concert from a band that I pretty much worshipped since i was in my early teens.

In better news, it was a pleasure to see biffy clyro live, they didn't have the stage presence of the chilis but its early days! I will definitely be going to see them live again.

Always On

I previously blogged about "code taking over" and have had some further thoughts/insight into this.

I am aware that some thoughts I have each day are well....a bit geeky to say the least, I look at a myriad of websites every day, usually to read about the subject I've searched for, only to discover that I'm actually thinking "how have they built that" or "thats a cool idea", so quite often, my attention has left the subject I was interested in in the first place and moved to dissecting the technical/design features of the particular website I'm looking at. Personally I think this can only be a good thing but I was interested to look back and see if I've always been this way or if it was purely down to being a developer.

My first jump back in time was to my days as a graphic designer where I used to irritate friends and family by commenting on the colour/font usage on a menu or bus shelter advert or flyer....or whatever. Now, to be honest, I still find myself doing this, only these days, I tend to keep it to myself...makes for a more enjoyable night out for everyone else who's with me!... but rest assured, when I'm out for dinner with you, I'll be silently critiquing the menu design, when someone hands me a flyer or I pick one up and you catch me staring at it...you now know what is running through my mind.

My second jump back in time is to when I briefly worked as an Instrument Technician dealing with pressure and temperature gauges, I found I had a whole new interest in what the current atmospheric pressure was and what effect it would have on the weather for example, and also I checked the pressure of my car tyres a lot more and moaned that the pressure gauge wasn't even on the same scale of accuracy as the super expensive gauges I calibrated at work.

My third jump back in time goes way way back to my childhood when I was "king of lego", I remember specifically looking for things to build out of lego for when I got home...I also remember looking at what my friends had built and using some of their ideas to build new super fancier models!

So I can only come to the conclusion that yes...I have always been like this, I tend to throw myself into what I am doing and fail to switch off. This must be a common trait for developers in particular as pretty much every one I know will be toying with some new technology, building some test application or researching something in the background. I also know that going to the pub can quickly become a full on discussion about what we could do with flex, ajax or some other current buzzword. Many people can get out of bed in the morning, go to work, come home and do something else...not me...and I know I'm not alone in this! I'm definitely not the first to coin the phrase "always on" but I think it suits us perfectly...so, enough of this time wasting...back to the code!
